
Presidents Bachelet & Kirchner at La Moneda Oct 29, 2009
The Chilean President traveled Thursday to the Vatican City. On Friday, Michelle Bachelet and the Argentinean President, Cristina Kirchner, will have a meeting with the Pope, Benedict 16, to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the 1984 Peace Treaty between the two neighboring countries.
On Thursday, the right-wing Presidential Candidate, Sebastián Piñera, presented his Government Plan in Maipú. The Chilean investor and politician delivered a speech about his plans for the Chilean Government if he is elected President of the Republic, like improving and expanding the Social Safety Net for the poor and the middle class. Piñera also referred to the complaints about including a homosexual couple in his TV spot, saying that he’s seeking to reduce discrimination in the nation and that he will be “the President of all Chileans”.
More than 7,000 firearms were destroyed on Thursday in Santiago as a way to prevent crime. The Minister of Interior, Edmundo Pérez Yoma, called on the population to discard their weapons in order to put an end to the increasing number of crimes in the Capital. The Minister added that the campaign will continue during the year, hoping more people will join this cause.
Chilean students complained about universities a few days before the PSU, the Chilean University Entrance Exam. According to the National Consumer Service, or Sernac, the complaints were mainly about infrastructure, curricular models and study programs. Sernac’s Director, José Roa, said that this year the organization has received about 3,000 complaints, that’s a 130 % rise from last year.
So far, the list includes 41 public and private universities, such as Universidad Arcis, Universidad Arturo Prat and Universidad de las Américas, all of which lead the large list of universities with more complaints by students.
