The Chilean President traveled Sunday to Estoril, Portugal. Michelle Bachelet participated yesterday in the opening of the 19th Ibero-American Summit in Portugal. The President also met with Shakira, the Colombian singer and promoter of the Foundation Latin American in Solidarity Action. They both addressed the topic of Child Poverty in Latin America. Tomorrow, Bachelet will have a meeting with the Portuguese President, Aníbal Cavaco, and the Prime Minister, José Sócrates.
Eduardo Frei said it is important to know the truth about his father’s death. On Sunday, the Judge Alejandro Madrid began the investigation of the death of the former President, Eduardo Frei Montalva, who governed Chile between 1964 and 1970. Frei Montalva died from an infection after undergoing minor surgery in 1982. Judge Madrid said the former President could have been poisoned by Pinochet’s secret police. His son and current Presidential Candidate, Eduardo Frei, said Chileans have the right to know the real causes of his father’s death.
Climate Change is drastically affecting Chile. Due to Global Warming, temperatures could increase up to 4 degrees Celsius in the country, causing rains between the Valparaíso and Los Lagos regions to drop up to 30 %. According to the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, or ECLAC, this situation could represent yearly losses of about 10 to 20 % in productive development. Therefore, the Chilean Government and ECLAC announced they would work together to find ways to prevent this from happening.
Carabineros, the Chilean National Uniformed Police, will launch a cutting-edge robot to defuse explosives. The Special Police Operations Group, or GOPE, acquired a new one million dollar anti-bomb robot called
Super Aunav to fight against the increasing bomb attacks in the country. The robot was made in Spain, where it was used against the Spanish terrorist group, ETA.
According to GOPE’s Head, the Commander Mario Carrillo, this new device will fully protect the person working with the explosives.
