María Teresa Dowling was the sister of Rafael Dowling, an entrepreneur from Osorno and also the wife of General Patricio Toro Tasara, who was the commander of the Third Army Division in Valdivia until 2008. According to eyewitness reports, Mrs. Dowling was last seen in the gym of the Hotel Le Montana in Haití, where most Chilean officials and their families stay while in the country.
Following the devastating January 12th earthquake, she was reported as missing for several days until her body was discovered. Her body was returned to Chile with her funeral taking place on January 26th. In a massive ceremony in which several high profile people attended, including President Michelle Bachelet and President Elect Sebastián Piñera.
Her husband, General Patricio Toro Tasara, was in charge of rescue operations in Haití whilst simultaneously searching for his wife in the devastated country.
