Top-seeded Chilean Fernando Gonzalez reached the quarter-finals at the Movistar Open for the eighth straight time after easing past Spanish qualifier Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo 6-4, 6-3 in 69 minutes, Wednesday night in Santiago.

“I think I played a better match today,” said Gonzalez, who is now unbeaten in 11 straight matches at Chile’s ATP World Tour 250 tournament. “Yesterday the points were shorter and today I had to work harder for them.”

With the exception of his first two appearances at the Movistar Open, the 29-year-old Gonzalez has never failed to advance beyond the quarter-finals. He clinched titles in back-to-back appearances in 2002 (d. Lapentti) and ’04 (d. Kuerten) and again in 2008 (d. Monaco) and ’09 (d. Acasuso).
