President-elect Sebastián Piñera called off a meeting with the President of the Independent Democratic Union (UDI), Juan Antonio Colomas, and the President of the National Renewal, Carlos Larraín. The meeting, which was originally scheduled to be held on Monday 8th, will now be held today at Sebastián Piñera’s house in San Damián. In the meeting, the right-wing President-elect will personally discuss his Presidential Cabinet with the presidents of both political parties. The official announcement of Piñera’s final Cabinet will be made at the National History Museum today at 6 in the afternoon.
The Peruvian Military Officer accused of espionage in favor of Chile will be tried by a Military Court. According to Javier Villa Stein, the president of the Peruvian Justice System, the Peruvian officer accused of spying against Peru and in favor of Chile, Víctor Ariza, will be tried by a Military Court this month. Stein said that Ariza had the opportunity to speak about the incidents and explain to the Peruvian Justice System judges the espionage accusations he was charged with; however, the crimes committed by the former officer violated the military power, which is why he will go on trial. Any information regarding Ariza’s trial and such will be officially and publicly announced on the official website of the Peruvian Justice System. Ariza is charged of revealing national secrets and spying against his own nation.
The Chilean Investigation Police, or PDI, arrested three people for illegal drug trade on Monday. The PDI Narcotics Squad arrested a bus assistant and two Bolivian women for cocaine trafficking. The three smugglers would carry the drug from Bolivia to Chile illegally, through roads that do not have police surveillance. According to the PDI, the women hired the bus assistant, a 35-year-old man named Marcos Retamal, for him to pick up the drugs from Iquique and smuggle them into Santiago using the bus as a hide out. The three individuals, who carried 41 kilos of drugs, will be tried this week in Pudahuel.
An elevator in Santiago fell and left several people injured early on Monday. The situation occurred after noon in downtown Santiago, in a building located on Agustinas street. For reasons that are still under investigation, an elevator fell from the fourth floor with eight people on board. The Carabineros, Chile’s National Uniformed Police, together with local fire departments worked together to help the people injured and control the situation. The eight individuals, who resulted injured after the elevator fell, were taken to different medical centers around Santiago by the Emergency Healthcare System ambulances, commonly known as SAMU.
